The Day That Ed Coffee Kicked My Butt...
I'll never forget that day when I was 10yrs old and walking home from school with my two best friends. That was the day Ed Coffee, the neighborhood bully, came up to us and started giving me and my friends a hard time.
He wanted our lunch money, and when I told him we didn't have any money and to leave us along - well, things went from bad to worse very quickly for me. I did my best to defend myself but things happened so quickly... and after a couple stomach punches and being tossed in the bushes - the fight was over. To make things worse, Ed stole my lunch box too - all while my friends stood-by too terrified to do anything.
This photo was me (in the middle) with my two best friends Danny and John and was taken the day before my fateful encounter with Ed Coffee when I was just 10 years old.
I had never felt more vulnerable and helpless then I did in that moment Ed Coffee was kicking my butt. I had never been confronted like that before and I didn't know what to do or how to get myself out of the mess I was in - Ed Coffee was a bad dude and I thought he was going to really hurt me.
When it was all done, I can remember feeling so down and (literally) defeated. I was so ashamed and embarrassed and as the weeks went by those feelings started to manifest into more and more self-doubt and low self-confidence.
After about a month went by, I started to reflect on what happened that day. It was then that I made myself a promise: I would learn how to protect and defend myself on the street against people like Ed Coffee, so that this kind of thing would never again happen to me or my loved ones.
That was the day I decided that I was going to commit to learning martial arts and to becoming highly skilled at defending and protecting myself and my loved ones - and that's when everything started to change for me. My self-confidence was back and I felt good about myself again and, as my skills continued to improve, other aspets of my life started to come together too. As a young adult I became more self-aware and at pearce with who I was. Marital Arts had given me my self-confidence back... and it had shifted my mindset from fear, doubt and worry - to courage, confidence and an unfailing sense that everything was gonna be alright.
